In Year I, the emphasis for Grades K-2 English Learners at Levels 1 and 2 is language production with the goal of achieving two English Proficiency Levels in one school year. This means that each English Now! A/B v2.0 lesson cycle consists of 15 lessons: nine vocabulary and grammar, one oral composition, two written composition, and three reading lessons. Five phonemic awareness lessons are taught at the end of the third lesson cycle in each unit.

In Year 2 (Year 1 for English Proficiency Levels 3 and 4), because the students are now likely to be at Levels 3 and 4, the focus becomes language-based literacy. The goal is achievement of one oral and written language proficiency level and on-or-above grade level in reading. English Proficiency Levels 3 and 4 English Learners in English Now! A/B v2.0 now receive a series of lesson cycles, each comprising 15 lessons: two vocabulary and grammar, one oral composition, two written composition, three reading lessons, and seven (7) alternate writing or reading lessons specified in the Appendix section of the Teacher’s Guide.
