Grades 6-8 Teaching Scenarios

Teacher oversees two students

Developmental Language for Beginning ESL (ELD, ESOL)

Example: ELLs at Levels 1 and 2 from one or two adjacent grades are placed in the Year 1 curriculum series listed on page 38 Table 1. This is a “fast track” sequence, designed to help beginning ELLs score at the “basic” level in reading and writing at the end of Year 1, and “advanced” or “proficient” at the end of the second or third year of instruction in English Now!

Language Arts Literacy Intervention

Example: ELLs at Levels 3 and 4 from one or two adjacent grades are placed in the Year 1 curriculum series listed on page 38 Table 2. This is a high level intervention sequence, designed to help students pass state proficiency tests in reading and writing. In Years 2 and 3, students progress to the higher level English Now! D and E genres that prepare them for advanced English language arts and content area courses.

Writing Supplement to Regular Language Arts or English Classes

Example: Reclassified ELLs and English-only students in regular language arts or English classes can benefit from the highly systematic English Now! Writing program, which could be used to supplement the core language arts curriculum. In turn, students can transfer these skills across the curriculum to other content areas.
