Truthfulness Generosity Gratitude Cooperation Habits of Character

The first Habit, Truthfulness, helps students understand why being truthful is necessary to develop their overall sense of self-worth or personal value.

The fruit of Truthfulness is Trust - a trait that the bully most likely lacks, as he or she cannot be trusted to say, act, or convey the truth. Rather, lying and deceitfulness often become the bullies’ modus operandi, weaving lie after lie to feed their need for power and control.

Habits of Character is a preventive program for potential student misbehaviors at school or at home. The four Habits chosen in Set 1 are meant to develop positive self-esteem and sociability.

Set 1, consisting of Truthfulness, Generosity, Gratitude, and Cooperation, is meant to prevent bullying – one of the most serious behavior problems at school. Recent bullying statistics reveal that about 160,000 children miss school every day out of fear of being bullied (http://www.bullyingstatistics.org). According to the same study, bullying has also become rampant in the cyber world, with about 2.5 million students being bullied each year by 2.1 students taking on the role of the bully.

As mentioned at the outset, the Habits of Character program is a preventive, not a reactive one. It is a simple program, easy to teach, and can be completed in a relatively short period of time. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
